In 100 days in 1994, somewhere between 500,000 and 1,000,000 people were killed in an ethnic conflict in Rwanda. This included up to 70% of the Tutsi population. Fueled by political conflict and the effects of European imperialism, this mass killing was carried out openly as the international community watched and did nothing. UN forces were present in Rwanda and armed with weapons much greater than the machetes of the perpetrators but they were not allowed to act and were in some cases even withdrawn from areas of conflict. We should not forget these lost lives or our own inaction, which allowed for their deaths.
